| A Career Choice That Pays Off
Before becoming a Financial Representative, I was a college student and had never worked anywhere else since graduating college. I was fortunate that I had an older brother who worked at Northwestern Mutual, and I was able to see the benefits of the career firsthand. The quality-of-life issue was significant to me, and I remember being impressed by the ability to manage your own time. I also was exposed to a group of successful individuals who were very outgoing and genuine. Lastly, having experienced a loss of a brother and the effects it had on my family, I felt a true desire to make sure that people would be all right in the event of unplanned financial challenges in their lives. The Worthy Rewards I love helping my clients solve their problems. Nothing makes me feel better than when a client calls with a question regarding a financial decision and wants my guidance. I love knowing that I have never missed a ball game, coached every year and that I have dinner with my family every night. Overcoming the Challenges The greatest challenge of being a Financial Representative is the management of a growing business -- trying to set up the infrastructure necessary for good service and growth. I think the biggest challenge in the first few years was producing at a level that was enough to sustain my lifestyle (which wasn't very high). I worked very hard during that time and knew no matter what happened, I was never going to do anything else. But I would say the money management was the hardest part. Since I started my career with Northwestern Mutual, I have found that I am a very strong person, and able to overcome a variety of challenges and bounce back. I have some very basic values of God, family, health and honesty that cannot be swayed. A Time I Made a Difference I insured a woman who worked in the World Trade Center on the 100th floor. Her husband was a stay-at-home dad. Unfortunately she was killed on 9/11. I was so impressed with Northwestern Mutual because in a matter of days we were in our conference room with my now-widowed client and claims specialists from Milwaukee. They paid this man right there. No death certificate, no body, nothing. I'll never forget that! Notable Milestones One of the highlights of my career was being asked to speak at the Eastern Regional Meeting in New York City six years ago and then again at the Annual Meeting the same year. Then again last year. Being asked to address the people you respect and admire was truly special. Sound Career Advice I think this career can be a dream come true for the right person. I think people need to realize that this is not an easy deal. You need to have a passion for it, a willingness to feel temporary pain for long-term gain. I would recommend this career because people need professionals like us to help them make decisions regarding their families and businesses. Northwestern Mutual is differentiated by its quality, professionalism, integrity and continuity. These factors permeate throughout the Company, from the home office management to Managing Partners, to Financial Representatives and beyond. As I look back over 25 years, I feel very fortunate having made the choices I did. I really didn't know a whole lot at 22 years old. It was after about ten years that I realized how good my decision really was. Since then this company has continued to impress me with the decisions it continues to make. Outside of Work Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family. I coach my daughters in soccer and softball. I have trained for and run marathons with my wife. I enjoy all forms of exercise. I have a passion for wine tasting and collecting. I have been on the board for Catholic Charities for several years. The programs they have to help those in need are fabulous.
