A Shift in Career
I have an engineering background. Before becoming a financial representative, I was running the service department in four towns for a forklift dealership. However, after I lost that job I contacted a Northwestern Mutual Financial Network financial representative whom I knew had also been an engineer in a former life.
 
The greatest reward with this career is the flexibility of how and when I work, plus the win/win situation that evolves when helping clients reach their objectives.  

The greatest challenge, now and in the early part of the career, is finding new clients.
 
In my career, I have learned I am much happier working where I have to answer only to my clients. I am better at working with people than for people. 
 
A Time I Made a Difference
One of my first claims resulted after working with a young minister and his wife. We did a small-term policy on each of them.  

About a year later she woke up one morning not feeling well. She died by 7:00 that evening. She had contracted myocarditis, which apparently at that time was very difficult to diagnose. She left her husband with a new baby and a toddler. The money allowed him to move back near family in New Mexico.

Notable Milestones
The milestones that stand out most are the first time I qualified for Million Dollar Round Table, the first time I made top 100 and the first time I made Court of the Table.  

I look forward to retirement, which will probably mean summers in Michigan and continuing to work with a few select clients while I transition the business to a younger representative.
 
Solid Career Advice
This is a prospecting business. You are underpaid the first 10 years and and virtually unlimited income potential thereafter. This is a great business for those with discipline, and it offers great freedom in choosing the type of lifestyle that you lead.

Outside of Work
I like to read, do woodworking, travel a little, do anything with boats and spend time in Michigan on the water, walk the beaches, walk in the woods and enjoy a small town environment.
