I was working for a national hotel chain with a property in downtown Pittsburgh. My position was eliminated. 

 

It was then that I realized how fabulous it would be to strike upon a career where my future rested not in the hands of some corporate executive but in my own efforts. 

Fortunately, Northwestern Mutual has been the recipient of all my focus the past 15 years.

Rewards Outweigh Challenges
I find the greatest rewards to be autonomy and satisfaction -- the ability to see people I truly enjoy on a daily basis and to help them take financial strides that they otherwise wouldn't undertake.

The greatest challenge is to not be satisfied with my current financial state and constantly fight to rise to the next level. And early in the career, it was challenging to find the confidence to do my work with authority so others clearly understood my mission.
   
Along the way, I've learned I'm only limited by my own thinking.

A Time I Made a Difference
Early on I became friendly with a man in my community who ultimately became a Northwestern Mutual policy holder. During the underwriting process he uncovered a medical condition that otherwise, if untreated, could have been life threatening.

Notable Milestones and Some Career Advice

Outside of Work
I enjoy involvement with the Young Leaders Group Steering Committee of the United Way and as a member of the finance committee at my daughters' school.
